It Finally Happened!

It’s been 13 years coming, but I’m pretty sure that my little brother (and youngest sibling) Joey has been doing body-lengthening exercises in his bed every night for the past year to attain status as the tallest sibling in the family. Well, today he combed his hair slightly spikier than usual and managed to pass me up.

It is a bittersweet moment for me as I relinquish my spot as the tallest of us kids, but at least it will put an end to the bi-weekly insistence that we measure ourselves to see who’s taller.

I was beginning to worry that Joey would suffer from lack of a goal to work toward after reaching this milestone, but he informed us this afternoon that he has commenced a new weight-training regimen to increase his strength and stamina.

Apparently he was inspired toward this end when he and my Dad recently attended the air show at our local Air Force base…

…Joey was dismayed that he still required the assistance of Dad in order to lift the B-52 off the ground. Guess it will take him a while to amass the strength Dad has built up in his decades of working out. That’s alright, bro, at least you can lift weights to your heart’s content now without having to worry about stunting your growth anymore. 🙂

Using Metaphors to Paint Pictures…Like a 2-Year Old with a Crayon

Ever since I came across the Mark Twain article I referred to in this post, I’ve thought quite a bit about the concept of using stronger nouns to paint descriptive images in my writing. I’ve also been particularly attuned to this aspect of writing in recent days as I’ve read the work of others, so I was quite amused to receive an e-mail from my Dad with the following metaphors and analogies that were actually used in essays written by high school students. I think it’s safe to say that this would not be the best way to integrate more visual imagery into your writing! May it bring a smile to your face like when the photographer uses a squeaky stuffed animal to make little babies laugh… 😉

Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two other sides gently compressed by a thigh master.

He spoke with wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

She had a deep throaty genuine laugh like that sound a dog makes just before he throws up.

Her vocabulary was as bad, as, like, whatever.

He was as tall as a 6-foot 3-inch tree.

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.

McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.

From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie surreal quality, like when you’re on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7 pm instead of 7:30.

Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hair after a sneeze.

Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across a grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. traveling 35 mph.

John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil, but unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a landmine or something.

He was deeply in love, and when she spoke he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

Her eyes were like limpid pools, only they had forgotten to put in any pH cleanser.

She walked into my office like a centipede with 98 missing legs.

Her voice had that tense grating quality, like a generation thermal paper fax machine that needed a band tightening.

Turns out I’m not a first-time published author after all…

Mom has been going through the basement shelves and office area, clearing things out and getting rid of what we no longer need. In the process, she came across an old book published by our homeschool association with a compilation of writings by local homeschool students. Lo and behold, there I was – in print! I have no recollection of this, but apparently I submitted a couple of my poems for this project. It’s been kind of fun to scan the collection and see other familiar names that contributed their creative efforts.

Those who submitted their poems and stories ranged in age from about seven to twelve, and I was eleven when I wrote these two poems – technically my first published work. 🙂 I’ve always enjoyed poetry and the art of rhyme. These are rather contrived, I know, but hey, you have to start somewhere!

Jesus is with Me
I once was a person just as plain as can be,
But then I met Jesus, and now I can see.
I want to listen to all His commands,
And then it will be time to take my stand.
I want Him to be with me all of my life,
Through laughter and pain, excitement and strife.

My Lord
God is my protector and my shield
Against enemies in the battlefield.
Though the enemy may cry,
No god of theirs is nigh.
Some of them may flee,
But my Lord is still with me.
In the middle of the field the enemy lay,
But I sat up to pray,
For the battle was not won by a sword,
The battle was won by the Lord!

The Paper Crazy Design Blog

Custom-Designed Guess Who? Game

Josh Harris has a fabulous post about how he custom-designed for his children a Narnia version of the popular Guess Who? game. This is such a creative idea! And I could see doing something similar to tie in to other areas – Early Church History, Reformers, Presidents, Composers, etc. I may just have to go pick up a Guess Who? game so I can try this out!
